Over a week without a post...no excuses.
I write to you from Collaroy Beach (Northern Sydney). After almost 2 weeks in Newcastle and tons of resumes spread around the city, I had no job potentials. I decided I had to get out and explore some other options. Living in a house for free is great, but the hour bus ride to and from the city makes things a little more difficult than desired. SO Saturday I took the train with Cameron and Caitlin to Sydney where we stayed in a hotel for the night. Sunday morning they got on a plane up to Cairns (Great Barrier Reef area) for their Australearn trip and I got a train/bus to Collaroy Beach. I chose this place because they had told me on the phone that there were lots of job opportunities here, the hostel is amazing, and it is 1 block from the beach.
On the bus here, I got my first sight of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor! I'll have to get back there soon.
After just a day here, I've already met some characters! I was on a bus with Joe as he was coming back from the airport. Joe is a citizen of England who was trying to get back home but they won't let him on a plane because his Australian visa is expired. He came here 2 and half years ago with a 1 year visa. He is a carpenter and has been working and traveling Australia.
My roomate Jason also has an interesting story. He is an Australian citizen who lives most of the year in Bali to surf. He rented a two bedroom place in Bali for the year for $3000. My first though was, wow that is Cheap! Then I realized that's the same price i was paying in Clemson. Thank you Micasa! He just came to Australia to work for a few months to earn enough money to go back to Bali and surf. I get the impression he does this every year.
On the surfing note, I walked up the beach yesterday and stumbled upon the end of the 'Australian Surftag Finals' at Narabeen beach. For the surfers out there, Taj Burrow was on the roster.
So for now I'm here scoping out the work for a few days and then I'll either head back to Newcastle, or some of the other guys will come here.
That's the story for now
Ned
