Recap on Reality

We started this journey thinking we’ll just head over to Australia, find ourselves some jobs and a place to live, earn some money, travel, surf and live the high life.

It’s amazing how few plans we had and even those plans were radically changed. What started as 5 guys looking for work and an apartment in Newcastle has turned into David and Sherb working on farms, Taylor heading home and Caleb and I living in the Gold Coast working. Whats crazy is that I think we are all totally satisfied and having a great time where we are.

After none of us had any luck with work in Newcastle, Caleb and I moved up here to continue the search. I know we both prayed and had a lot of other people praying that jobs would happen. After 2 months of searching, its so great to know that God works in his time.

Although it took 2 months, we have been blessed with work opportunities! We covered this town in our resumes until we met Jim and Jessie who told us they were leaving in a week so we went and applied at their jobs and both landed work, a huge relief! About that same time the hostel needed some workers so we started working here for free accommodation, BIG money saver.

Well Caleb worked for about a week at Steam Café and the owner decided it was time to cut 8 workers down 3 so it didn’t last too long (he hasn’t been fired but hasn’t been scheduled for 2 weeks. We’re still hoping they’ll pick him back up).

Then last week one of our coworkers at the hostel told us about a guy looking for someone to come help him with a construction project at his house for about 2 weeks. He needed someone with their own transportation and we’re the only people at the hostel with a car, so Caleb was the man for the job. He worked last week and has another week to go. Wednesday I was free and they needed another person so both of us got to work. We spent all day shoveling dirt in the pouring rain and enjoying it! I mean how often do you get to be covered in mud in the rain and get paid for it? Not to mention our tea/coffee breaks and the home made lunch.

So even though at times it seems like we will never make enough money to travel on, the work opportunities have started to come our way. We have started to realize how good we have it with English as our first language. A lot of people looking for work around here speak English as a second language.
