Caleb had his trial run for Steam Cafe on Tuesday and it went well. After some Youtube research on how to make cappuccinos and lattes he’s ready. I’ve been working at the hostel for free accommodation. So far my two shifts have been cleaning bathrooms and making beds/cleaning rooms. On Friday I made 33 beds.
As of a call this morning I am also employed at RAW Energy! It’s a health sandwich/smoothie place. We actually owe both of our jobs to our friend Jim Gould. Jim graduated from UVA a few years ago and he and his girlfriend have also been living out of their car and working here for the last few months. We’ve gotten to know them through use of the public grills, free internet in the library and all the other places middle class homeless people hang out. They are leaving on Tuesday so we went and applied where they work and now we are pretty much replacing them. I don’t care where you go or who you are, it’s no what you know, it’s who you know. It’s a good feeling to finally be employed and quit draining my poor bank account.
I made a long anticipated purchase…finally got a surfboard. Similar to the pink skateboard I’ve been riding since 5th grade, it’s straight out of the 80’s. The price tag was the biggest attraction, but it’s been a perfect ride so far. Australia completely deserves its reputation for great waves. Within a 10 minute drive of us, there are beaches facing all different directions so no matter what direction the wind or swell is coming from, somewhere will have clean waves.
Saturday we decided it was time for some adventure away from the coast. We headed about an hour inland and did some hiking through the rainforest. Some kids told us there were rock slides there so we looked for them but had no luck. It was fun to go hike and get in the woods.
While living out of the car we really enjoyed cooking on the grills outside so we still do it a lot. They are in pretty awesome locations as you can see.
Sunday after church we went down to a local surf contest. These guys were in the retro division.
